Before 1967 motorists in Sweden drove on the left hand side of the road. It is speculated that the reason for this could be so that the swordhand – right for most people – was closest to the enemy when meeting on horseback.
However, this was an issue as neighbouring countries in Scandanavia and the rest of the continent drove on the right hand side of the road.
The government decided that on September 3, 1967 all of the cars in the country would stop- wait for 10 minutes- and then be diverted to the right hand side of the road.
Ever since- they have driven on the right hand side of the road.
